Symptom Support Clinic

Our goal is to provide our cancer patients with convenient care when they start having symptoms related to cancer treatment. We are a collaborative clinic where you will be evaluated over the phone by our triage nurse. Depending on your severity, our nurses will make you an appointment with one of our advanced practice clinicians (APCs). Our APCs have years of experience in oncology, hematology, and the treatment of chemotherapy symptoms. They will collaborate very closely with your doctor.

We typically provide same-day appointments and help you avoid the emergency department in most cases. You can arrange an appointment by calling our Symptom Support hotline at (406) 752-8672. These appointments are available Monday thru Friday for cancer patients who are currently on treatment, and who experience acute or severe symptoms. Telemedicine visits are available.

When to contact the Symptom Support Clinic

Patients may be seen for the following symptoms, but not limited to:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Shortness of breath

*PainTrue emergencies such as active chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe shortness of breath, etc., should continue to be evaluated in the Emergency Department.

A Life Saving Problem: How an incidental finding saved a life

When Paul Uken met with his primary care provider in September 2023, he knew there was something wrong. Not long before, he had encountered a urologic issue and was worried he was bleeding internally. His doctor ordered a CT scan of his bladder and kidneys to determine if there were any abnormalities. The scan did not indicate any issue with either the bladder or the kidneys, but it did catch something else. The image picked up the lower part of the lungs, and a small lung nodule looked problematic. While still very small, growth of these nodules often indicates cancer.
